Dr. Mohamed El-Sharo

Dr. Mohamed El-Sharo is an Associate Professor at Western Washington University, an Industrial and Systems Engineer, and an operations leader with extensive experience in healthcare systems improvement, Lean transformation, and data-driven decision-making.

In academia, Dr. El-Sharo is an Associate Professor and the Lead Faculty (Program Director) for the Industrial and Systems Engineering Program on the Peninsula at Western Washington University. In this role, he leads program development and curriculum design, teaching courses focusing on performance improvement, systems thinking, and real-world application. He continues to teach courses in manufacturing process planning, statistics, and applied numerical methods, emphasizing experiential learning and industry relevance.

He currently serves as Director of Operations at Diamond Dental and Sapphire Denture Clinic, where he leads strategic initiatives focused on performance optimization, KPI development and monitoring, resource planning, and organizational growth. Dr. El-Sharo brings over a decade of experience in healthcare systems engineering and process improvement. His previous roles include Lean Specialist at PeaceHealth, as well as Health Systems Engineering at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. His work has consistently focused on improving system efficiency, patient safety, and operational throughput using methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, Theory of Constraints, and Discrete-Event Simulation modeling.

His latest research includes applied work on improving ambulatory surgery center throughput using SMED and Lean approaches, achieving significant gains in efficiency and patient access. His interests span healthcare systems engineering, facility design, human factors, and continuous improvement.

Dr. El-Sharo holds a Ph.D and M.S. in Industrial and Systems Engineering and is passionate about bridging theory and practice to create high-performing, resilient systems.
